Paige is a troubled freshman in college who is trying to start fresh. She is continuously held back by her family’s sordid secrets and the way her past binds her and drags her back into it. When she tried and failed to commit suicide, Paige is forced to deal with her conflicted feelings, and upon the insistence of her girlfriend Jess, promises to see the college counselor once a week. From her homophobic Catholic roommate to her girlfriend’s misguided mission to help everyone around her, Paige will have to learn to deal with who she is and what happened in her past. In learning who she is, Paige will discover the most juicy, horrific secret of them all.From the very beginning through to the very end, I was hooked. The opening was wonderfully executed by introducing a fluid and fantastically intriguing writing style. The end was one of those one liners that is so satisfying as the final sentence of a novel.
Paige is such a dynamic character. She may talk about herself as having specific characteristics and personality traits, but her character has depth. The narrative style reminds me of the style used in the movie Warm Bodies. T.B. Markinson and the Warm Bodies screen writer Jonathan Levine employ continuously running inner-dialogue that is amazingly interesting and spot on for the character. I am in love with Paige and how she tells her story. Her thoughts are juicy, spicy, and vivid. This would make a very good audiobook.
This book had me laughing as much as the Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. The main character Paige is one for a witty comeback that makes for such a fun read. Her unintentional humor as a person makes these situations even more funny. One of my favorite lines was Paige’s response to one of Liddy’s comments about how Liddy doesn’t do her job for the money. Paige says to Liddy, “I suppose prostitutes could say the same thing.” (Location 462).
I recommend this book for anyone who enjoyed the witty comments in Warm Bodies, wants a book that integrates the LGBTQ community without being obvious about it, or would like a dynamic YA book featuring a troubled college-aged female protagonist.

I was intensely excited for approximately 70% of this book to be reading something so well written with such an absorbing character. This novel is honest, touching, and painful and I found the book hard to put down. It definitely was going to deserve a five star review. However, for me, the story went off the tracks toward the end. I was prepared for the evil parents to remain bad to the bone, for a crisis between these sociopaths and their daughter that would ultimately be resolved by Paige reaching legal age and developing the confidence to completely detach from her family. Her twin sister was an interesting unknown who had to eventually be introduced into the plot in some fashion. But when the evil parents actually were revealed as psychopathic criminals, when the reason behind the suicide attempt was because her mother had killed her half sister, when we had embezzlement and murder and revenge killings etc. as both the explanation behind Paige's torturous childhood and the author's attempt to wind up the story with a happy, happy tidy ending, the book lost credibility and a star. Having both girls separately discover their father's perfidy by researching on the 'net is just silly. I think the author is a very good writer but I wish her editor had insisted she use a little more subtlety in resolving her story.
I'm a bit torn here. I'm a fan of Ms. Markinson's, and was expecting great things from Marionette. It has a lot of the things I loved about her other books - interesting characters, surprising twists, some surprises - but it left me wanting more than I got. I felt like there should have been more revealed about the family dynamic, as what was revealed left me skeptical. I wasn't able to buy into the plot as completely as I had with other books. I also seriously disliked Jess, the main character's girlfriend. I wanted her to be evil, or to turn out to be something completely other than what she seemed, but she just fell flat for me. I'm giving the book 3 stars because I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to really enjoy it, but I remain a huge fan of Ms. Markinson's!
The first few sentences of Marionette hooked me right away. Paige tried to kill herself by cutting her wrists, but she failed. And she hates herself for failing. In the beginning she seemed pretty introverted and introverted me appreciated that. You don’t often find introverted characters in a book. (I don’t know if she really was or not, but that was my impression and it made me enjoy this story even more.) On top of that, Paige is a very interesting character. All of T.B. Markinson’s characters are great. They feel so real and that’s what I love about reading her books. But Paige really stuck with me. She was developed so well. Her internal dialogue is dark and sarcastic, which was entertaining. A few parts read like rambling thoughts, but it was all information we needed to know to understand Paige’s relationship with her family.
Paige’s girlfriend, Jess, makes her promise to go to therapy during college and Paige doesn’t break her promises. In her therapy sessions we learn about her past. I enjoyed those moments because it gave us a deeper look into Paige and revealed a dark history involving her parents, twin sister, and her best friend who died years ago.
There are secrets galore in this story, and a ton of tamales. If you like characters with dark, secretive pasts, unfolding mysteries, and stories about college students, I highly recommend this book.
Note There is talk of suicide and there are gay characters. I mention this only for the readers who won't like that. Oh and if you don't like farting...there's a lot of farts in this story. (Haha!)
